The Wreckers
The Cornish coastline is not only known for its enticing beaches but for the many lives and ships that have been taken by its dangerous shores over several centuries. The main reason why these old tales haunt the seaside are simply because of the numerous perilous factors while sailing. Without the seeking beams of a lighthouse, Cornwall’s changeable weather could cause a clear day to quickly transform into fog and strong winds and tides could abruptly drive ships into coves and deltas (Hughes par. 2). The geography of Cornwall also played a key role in the shipwrecks. It was required to be able to navigate through a bottleneck between the peninsula of Sicily and the mainland. Combined with violent winds, it created relentless currents and tides. Additionally, the cliffs on the northern coast were higher, so it was much more difficult for navigators to evaluate how far from the coast they were (Hughes par. 3). Another reason is also that Cornwall contained a number of active ships known to be run by smugglers and wreckers, people who purposely caused a ship to crash in order to pillage the ship’s belongings ("Smugglers and Wreckers" par. 5). In reality, wreckers never purposely caused a ship to crash but only plundered crashed ships’ goods("Smugglers and Wreckers" par. 5).
Shipwrecks play a key role in Rebecca due to the fact that it was the nature of her death. Before her original body was found, investigators merely classified it as an accidental death because they were aware of how perilous the coast was.The arrival of Rebecca’s boat and her body have investigators perplexed by what exactly happened to her. However, they soon discover that it was no accident at all but the boat was deliberately sunk.
